(335) A New Interprofessional Event Expands Awareness through Curiosity, Accountability, Appreciation, Respect, Empathy, and Service

Objective : To create an interprofessional, interactive activity to expand awareness of one’s privilege and to increase empathy for others through a new educational activity.

Methods: Eighty-one statements were posed to students, staff, and faculty at the Health Sciences Campus. The categories of statements included language/communication, access/resources, religion, personal health, identities, power, and support and security. The statements were placed throughout small rooms with posterboards for responses, and props were included in each room. Participants were able to respond anonymously by either placing a sticker on corresponding posterboards or responding electronically to answer yes to a statement. Organizers were placed throughout to help direct participants through the event. Participants were provided with an optional closing survey.

Results: Two hundred and four individuals from the schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health participated in the March 2023 event. The event was not only impactful by provoking awareness of individual privileges, but also by revealing the current challenges that students, staff, and faculty are facing including required use of bottled water (15%), lack of shared identities with peers and administration (12%), having access to health insurance (95%), and courses being taught in their primary language (80%). Fifty participates completed the closing survey. Participants overall enjoyed the event, as most rated their experience as very good/excellent (88%). Comments on the survey stated that the event was impactful by helping them recognize their own privileges and helped create empathy for those who experience life differently.

Conclusions: The interactive interprofessional event increased participants’ consideration about privileges and empathy of the differences those around them and easily be replicated at other institutions.
