(384) A Coordinated Approach to School-Wide Faculty & Staff Development

The University of Washington School of Pharmacy supports faculty and staff development through a variety of methods with the goal of assuring a broad-based, inclusive program of support for growth of individuals and the community. In addition to programming provided by individual departments, three of the key initiatives that form the basis of support are the Faculty Development Program, Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Council’s Learning & Development Workgroup, and Quarterly All-School Staff Meetings. The Faculty Development Program is a quarterly series of workshops with annual topics determined based on faculty input and PharmD program assessment data, anchored by a longer session each year during the annual PharmD Curricular Summit. While the series has an emphasis on instructional development, additional topics related to research, service, and leadership are integrated where appropriate. Two sessions each year also include opportunities for faculty to present their research and/or scholarly teaching initiatives they have integrated into their courses. The DEI Council’s Learning & Development Workgroup supports DEI-related learning opportunities as outlined in the School’s DEI Strategic Plan. The Workgroup coordinates school-wide events and continuous learning opportunities to support DEI-related development for faculty, staff, and students, including the DEIC Lending Library. Quarterly All-School Staff Meetings provide opportunities for staff throughout the School to engage as a group, receive training related to School-wide priorities, and address key School-wide needs. These meetings include both training and updates on School- or University-specific procedures and general skill development topics. Engagement with these initiatives has been greater than expected, with more than 75% of faculty and staff participating in at least one annually.
