(463) Deliberate practice simulation training to help preceptors build racially inclusive experiential environments

Objective : The purpose of this research was to pilot racial inclusivity preceptor training program using a deliberate practice simulation format.

Methods: Preceptors attended a two-hour training for managing difficult teaching scenarios. The training included a total of three 10-minute simulated person encounters with a student, provider, and patient, respectively, in which race and ethnicity was the topic of focus or concern. Between each encounter, preceptors completed a small group debrief and discussed strategies on how to address these scenarios before the next attempt. Participants completed a pre-survey about their previous experiences and a post-survey about the impact of the training.

Results: Seven preceptors completed the training—of note, participant recruitment was a significant challenge unanticipated by the research team likely due to the nature of the topic. All participants identified as female and most were White (71%) with one to 15 years of pharmacy practice experience. All participants (100%) rated the experience as valuable and a good use of time that met their expectations. All participants (100%) also agreed they learned applicable skills and felt psychologically safe during the experience. Participants reported an increase in their self-efficacy to address inappropriate behaviors of learners, colleagues, and patients and endorsed an ability to create an inclusive learning environment. Improvements suggested by participants included more direct feedback about their specific encounters and more written and/or recorded reference resources.

Conclusions: Simulate training could offer a unique strategy to support preceptor development of skill sets that foster racially inclusive learning environments. Participants responded positively to the training; however, obtaining sufficient recruitment may be a substantial challenge for future researchers.
