(102) Open Artificial Intelligence Use to Generate Patient Cases and Improve Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process Skills

Objective : To assess the impact of ChatGPT derived cases on improving first-year student pharmacists’ independent patient care process (PPCP) skills and to evaluate their perception of open artificial intelligence.

Methods: First-year student pharmacists enrolled in an online or traditional nonprescription pharmacotherapeutics course utilized ChatGPT to generate individualized cases to complete a patient care plan assignment. Students inputted select prompts of their choice into the ChatGPT software. After course completion students were invited to complete an anonymous, voluntary Qualtrics® survey regarding the impact of the ChatGPT assignments on improving their independent PPCP skills. Data regarding student performance and case characteristics were retrieved from Canvas and descriptive statistics were utilized to assess all study data.

Results: Of the 81 students enrolled in the course, surveys were completed by 18 total students (16.9% of online, 36.4% of traditional response rate). Prior to completing the ChatGPT-based assignment 8 of the students reported low confidence in identifying and assessing drug-related problems and 10 reported high confidence. After completing the assignment 3 students reported low confidence and 12 students reported high confidence. 22.2% of the students were not confident at all in their use of ChatGPT before the assignment, compared to 0% after the assignment completion. 85% of the cases generated were utilized by a single student and any identical cases were utilized by no more than 3 students.

Conclusions: The use of open artificial intelligence created unique patient cases and students reported their confidence level in their pharmacists’ patient care process (PPCP) skills improved.
