(140) The Incorporation of a TikTok Activity into an Informatics Integrated Lab Sequence for Student Pharmacists.

Objective : ​​The purpose of this project is to describe the use of TikTok in an informatics integrated lab sequence (ILS) and to assess students’ perception on using TikTok as an educational tool.

Methods: Student pharmacists participated in the informatics ILS lab in the Spring of 2024. At the start of class, students took a pre-assessment quiz. Then, students worked in small groups to create an innovative informatics technology commercial using TikTok. At the end of the activity, the class viewed the videos together. Then students were divided into two groups to take the post-assessment quiz and quality improvement survey given one week later. The students in group A received access to the TikTok videos and a PowerPoint presentation while students in group B only had access to the PowerPoint presentation. Pre-quiz and post-quiz results were compared using descriptive statistics.

Results: Fifty-nine students participated in this study. There were 30 students in group A and 29 students in group B. Most of the students felt they accomplished the following co-curricular outcomes: utilizing an innovative mindset (84.8%), using critical thinking skills (71.2%). Of the group A students, 66.7% agreed or strongly agreed that the TikTok videos enhanced their knowledge on informatics, however only 50% reviewed the videos outside of class. Eleven (37.9%) of group B students passed the post-assessment compared to 8 (26.7%) of group A students. However, students in group A performed better on 3 of the questions than group B on the 8-question post-assessment.

Conclusions: The TikTok activity implemented in the informatics ILS class encouraged students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills. Further research is needed to test using TikTok as an educational tool.
