(329) Supporting Learner’s Patient Care Process and Clinical Reasoning in Clinical Placements Using the SNAPPS Approach

Objective :

Objective: The SNAPPS (Summarize, Narrow, Analyze, Probe, Plan, Select) approach has been used in medicine to facilitate concise patient summaries, clinical reasoning, and case-based uncertainties. The objectives of this educational initiative are to: 1) use the SNAPPS approach to support learners in succinctly presenting patient care workups to preceptors in experiential placements to foster development of patient care and clinical reasoning skills, and 2) to evaluate implementation of this rotation activity.

Methods:

Methods: The SNAPPS approach by Wolpaw et al was adapted to the pharmacist’s patient care process. Learners were introduced to the approach in the Skills Lab course using an interactive lab patient care station simulating a conversation with a preceptor. During their second year Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) in hospital, learners present assigned patient cases using the SNAPPS approach as a rotation activity. Implementation of the SNAPPS approach has been evaluated by collecting learner and preceptor satisfaction in IPPE rotation course feedback with an end of rotation evaluation question (Likert scale) and comments received over two course iterations (2022 and 2023).

Results:

Results: In course evaluations, related to the ability of SNAPPS to support presenting a case in an organized, concise way and to demonstrate clinical reasoning, 53% (39/73) in 2022, and 48% (31/64) in 2023 of learners reported agreement, while 80% (56/70) in 2022 and 58% (37/63) in 2023 of preceptors reported agreement. Both students and preceptors have suggested more training and practice in using the approach would be beneficial.

Conclusions:

Conclusion: The SNAPPS approach has been implemented in the practice experience program curriculum, however more work is needed to train learners and preceptors and to better understand potential challenges to using this approach.
