(452) Utilizing Technology to Optimize Teaching and Learning at Temple University School of Pharmacy

Objective: describe how Temple University School of Pharmacy (TUSP) faculty use technology to optimize teaching and learning in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

Methods: incorporation of various technologies into teaching the TUSP PharmD program has occurred over the course of several years.

Results: Canvas is utilized as the Learning Management System for TUSP and is optimized to ensure universal design of learning. Course modules are created to introduce new topic areas with slides, handouts, and other readings to prepare for class. Quizzes and Discussion Boards are used to assess students knowledge and provide opportunities to address questions. TUSP uses Panopto to create flipped lectures posted to Canvas, which can also incorporate quizzes to assess student understanding of the material. Panopto is also used to record didactic lectures, which are posted to Canvas after the class period. This resource assists students in reviewing material taught in video and audio format to prepare for high stakes assessments. ExamSoft is used by TUSP for all high stakes examinations in required courses. Questions on each assessment are tagged to indicate the type and level of each question, as well as what TUSP Educational Competency the question is assessing. Upon completion of the examinations, students are able to access Strengths and Opportunities reports to assess their progress. Finally, TUSP requires all PharmD students to maintain e-Portfolios on the COMP-MS system. The portfolios track progress towards the Educational Competencies as well as providing opportunities for goal-setting and completion and reflection of co-curricular activities.

Conclusion: TUSP has incorporated several modalities of technology in order to improve the teaching and learning in the PharmD program.
