(141) Ticket to Pass: Intensive Multistate-Pharmacy-Jurisprudence-Exam (MPJE) Prep with Assessment Opportunities at End of Pharmacy Curriculum

Objective : Pharmacy law as assessed by the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE) is essential to pharmacy graduates but pass rates have recently declined. The objective was to evaluate an intensive strategy to prepare students for the MPJE.

Methods: An intensive MPJE preparation strategy was used in Spring 2023 by incorporating a four-session law review into an existing board preparatory course taken the month preceding graduation. Each two-hour session included faculty review of key concepts and were followed by at-home, post-session quizzes. Faculty developed quiz questions included high-difficulty styles such as select-all-that-apply, k-type, and scenario-based. Quizzes were ungraded and allowed multiple attempts for extra practice. At the conclusion of the course, students completed the NABP Pre-MPJE. This intensive strategy was in comparison to Spring 2022 which included a one-session review by a local pharmacist without assessment opportunities. Data collected included MPJE school pass rates for 2022 and 2023 and quiz results from 2023. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis.

Results: Overall MPJE pass rates for the class of 2023 (intervention) was 82.3% (n=62) compared to 60.3% (n=63) for the class of 2022 (control). Scores from the four ungraded quizzes in the intervention year showed a first-attempt average of 48.73% (56 questions), 47.99% (45 questions), 24.94% (72 questions), and 48.02% (57 questions) for each quiz. The KR20 for the quizzes ranged from 0.89 to 0.94.

Conclusions: The intensive MPJE review coupled with robust assessment opportunities was associated with higher MPJE pass rates. Although multiple variables are associated with pass rates, students may benefit from robust practice. Safe opportunities for failure such as ungraded quizzes may be beneficial for other programs as part of their MPJE review strategies.
