(446) Supported People Make a Successful College: A Decade of Faculty and Staff Development

Objective: Describe the culture and values-driven faculty and staff development at South Dakota State University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. Infrastructure: A central value of the College is professional development of faculty and staff–this has been a key element of the College’s Strategic plan for more than a decade. The College’s approach to faculty and staff development centers on utilization of tiered resources at the University, College, Program, and Department levels. The College, Programs, and Departments allocate resources including financial support for professional development programs including travel, dedicated time at all meetings, onboarding and cross-training resources, development-specific meeting time, buyout time for faculty and staff, and committed funds for professional development resources. Outcomes and Programs: Integration of University-provided resources from the Center for Professional Enrichment and Teaching Excellence (CPETE) resulted in 18 professional development events provided to College personnel and three faculty completing the 3-year long CPETE fellow program. College-wide development efforts are supported by work from the Faculty Development Committee and Staff Council; these units coordinate to offer streamlined programming in addition to offering position-tailored resources. In the past two years, outcomes include integration of active learning strategies into biannual College-wide meetings, staff/Executive Team Q&A series, a data-driven approach to faculty mentoring, support funds available (and renewed annually) to all College personnel, and an additional application-based development support fund. Implications: A culture that prioritizes staff and faculty professional development has resulted in numerous programs, processes, and training that support and strengthen staff and faculty success.
