(445) Strengthening the Climate: Comprehensive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives within a College of Pharmacy

Objective: To describe the comprehensive effort made by a college of pharmacy to create a culture of belonging, thereby strengthening an inclusive climate.

Methods: Faculty and staff prioritized personal and professional development efforts pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). A Diversity Advocates group was organically formed in response to a collective desire to foster a climate of inclusivity and belonging. A priority of the group was to develop and oversee the implementation of a DEI Strategic Plan to spearhead initiatives.

Results: Momentum ignited by the Diversity Advocates group has led to significant accomplishments such as an all-faculty and staff DEI Toolkit Workshop, faculty and staff book club discussions, development of a systematic approach for hiring processes to ensure diverse applicant pools, new dedicated funds to staff development, community outreach efforts, and increased focus on culture, climate, and interpersonal relationships. These accomplishments prompted the launch of impactful initiatives in the following areas: pipeline development, enrollment management, curricular change, mentorship, community outreach, and faculty and staff development. Extensive efforts to positively impact these domains have resulted in recognition as a recipient of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award for five consecutive years.

Conclusions: The culmination of efforts by faculty and staff resulted in integration of the DEI Strategic Plan into the overarching Strategic Plan of the College. Diversity, equity, and inclusion principles are incorporated into each pillar of the College’s Strategic Plan and serve as guiding principles at the forefront of creating an inclusive college community.
