Purpose: The Core Values Program was designed to strengthen faculty and staff success by becoming a "values-based organization".
Objectives: 1. Identify and Define the Core Values of the College, 2. Communicate those Values to all Stakeholders, 3. Develop Plans to Ensure the Values are Meaningfully Integrated into the College's Activities and Culture, 4. Create a "Values-Based Strategic Plan" to Guide the Long-Term Growth of the College, 5. Assess, Monitor, Evaluate the Impact of the Values and Revise and Update Them When Needed
Method: We used an iterative process that included 1-to-1 and small-group discussions, college-wide meetings, and surveys to identify a master list of 26 values that were important to faculty, staff, and other stakeholder groups in the college. We then used a mixed-methods approach to analyze and refine that list into 19 values and then into 7 "value clusters." Those value clusters were then used as the basis for further clarifying and refining the final list of 7 values. The values were approved by a vote of faculty and staff.
IMPLEMENTATION: Once the values were approved, we implemented a series of programs and policies to increase awareness and support their use. The most innovative is an online survey in which stakeholders can "report" their colleagues who demonstrate each of the values in daily practice.
This poster will describe a values-based organization, summarize the steps in developing core values, list specific steps in the implementation process, describe future activities, and provide recommendations for colleges wishing to start a similar program.
