(177) Review and Evaluation of Resilience Measurement Scales

Objective : The importance of resilience including academic resilience is well recognized in one’s ability to succeed in the face of adversity. While a number of tools have been developed to measure resilience, they seem to be in a variety of settings and populations with varied methods of scale development. The objective of this scoping review is to identify, categorize, and evaluate construct validity of published resilience scales.

Methods: The PRISMA methodology for performing a scoping review was utilized to search Education Full Text, ERIC, PsycInfo databases for pertinent literature. The search items used were (build* OR develop* OR train*) AND resilien*, (build* OR develop* OR train*) AND “academic resilien*”, and (build* OR develop* OR train*) AND “mental resilien*. Articles were screened through November 3, 2023 and included original studies, those that studied resilience in humans, and those focused on implementing a new resilience tool.

Results: While 2440 studies were initially identified with the search terms, only 54 described a new measurement tool with 50 using self-ratings. Twenty-eight scales involved adult population, 26 were on young adult/adolescent/child populations with only 2 including children. One study was in military setting, 22 in academic, 6 involved employees, and 25 in general population 8 of which involved patients. The number of items ranged from 4 to 94. The number of factors constituting resilience ranged from 1 to 12, with 11 studies including only one.

Conclusions: There was considerable variability in number and types of factors used to measure resilience with some studies considering resilience as a singular quality and others viewing resilience as combination of many interrelated qualities. There is need for a more commonly agreed upon factors defining resilience.
