(434) Making Workplace Culture Intentional: The CU Pharmacy Way

Objective: To describe the process the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (CUSSPPS) used to intentionally design, implement, and sustain its work culture.

Methods: A leadership team (LT) of faculty and staff was assembled to envision a designed culture for the CUSSPPS. The LT followed the 8-step framework described in the book “Culture by Design.” An organizational culture consultant was hired to help identify and describe desirable elements of an intentional culture. Current practices and aspirations for a culture encompassing the school’s values were examined. Feedback sessions gathered employees’ thoughts on behaviors that drive positive workplace culture. A rollout event introduced the identified culture fundamentals to the school. A culture baseline survey (CBS) was then distributed to assess current culture strengths and challenges.

Results: Twenty-four culture fundamentals were identified in areas of communication, student-centeredness, and positive work methodologies. A pocket card defining the fundamentals was distributed and discussed at a school-wide retreat. Fundamentals were also embedded in recurring school practices. Weekly emails expanding on each behavior are sent by the dean and discussed during meetings with ≥3 people. CBS results indicate that 70% of respondents have felt encouraged to adjust their actions and behaviors to be consistent with the culture fundamentals. CBS data will guide future CUSSPPS culture-related initiatives.

Conclusions: A vibrant workplace culture fosters belonging and offers a unique advantage, contributing to employee retention, collaboration, and innovation. Workplace culture must be intentional and not left to chance. The 8-step framework was an effective guide for the CUSSPPS in designing and implementing its desired culture. Annual surveys will track progress and inform practices to reinforce designed culture and ensure long-term success.
