(422) Implementing Restorative Justice Training: A Pathway to Enhanced Communication and Conflict Resolution

Background: Restorative justice practices have gained recognition as effective tools for conflict resolution and community building in educational settings. Husson University seeks to integrate these practices to foster a more supportive and collaborative environment among faculty and staff. The School of Pharmacy supports these efforts by encouraging faculty and staff to participate in the training program.

Method: The training program was organized through the Office of the Provost and inspired by the university's ongoing efforts to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). More than 40 faculty and staff university-wide have participated in the Tier 1 training over the past two years, including six faculty from the School of Pharmacy, three of whom also attended Tier 2 training. The training encompassed principles of restorative justice, communication skills, and practical applications in community building and conflict resolution.

Result: Feedback from participants indicated an improved understanding of restorative justice principles. Faculty and staff reported feeling better equipped to manage conflicts and expressed a stronger sense of community. Anecdotal evidence points to a decrease in interpersonal conflicts and an enhancement in collaborative efforts. Some faculty and staff have begun incorporating Tier 1 principles into their courses and student orientation programs.

Conclusion: The implementation of restorative justice training in the School of Pharmacy has demonstrated promising outcomes in enhancing communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening community bonds. This initiative serves as a model for integrating restorative practices in higher education settings to create more supportive and cohesive academic environments.
