(323) Preceptor Perspectives on Disability-Related Accommodations in Pharmacy Experiential Education

Objective : Limited information is available regarding preceptor perspectives on disability-related accommodations in pharmacy experiential education, and it was hypothesized that a need exists for preceptor development and resources to meet accommodation requests. The objective of this study was to describe these preceptor perspectives and inform ways that schools of pharmacy (SOP) can support preceptors in meeting access needs.

Methods: A survey was developed and electronically distributed to preceptors from investigator institutions in spring 2024. The survey collected data on preceptor demographics, preceptor experiences with accommodation requests, associated support/education offered by affiliated SOP, and preceptor identified needs in this area. Survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and open-ended responses were reviewed for themes.

Results: Completed surveys that met inclusion criteria were received from 271 respondents. Of the respondents who had been notified of the need for accommodation, most (55%) were notified only by the student. The most common challenges encountered when implementing experiential accommodations were lack of clarity regarding the accommodation request (22%) and uncertainty regarding how to apply the accommodation within the preceptor’s practice (25%). Few respondents (20%) agreed or strongly agreed that their affiliated SOP provided training or resources on implementation of accommodations in their practice setting. However, most respondents (77%) agreed or strongly agreed that they would benefit from professional development in this area. Free-text responses indicated that many respondents desire education, resources, and/or proactive communication related to the support of students with disabilities.

Conclusions: Areas of opportunity for SOP to support preceptors in providing accessible rotation experiences include enhanced communication with the SOP and preceptor development related to implementing accommodations. Further studies can focus on implementation and assessment of such preceptor development programs.
