(110) Post-Exam Processes and Student Perceptions of In-Course Remediation in a Pharmacotherapeutics Course Series

Objective : To describe post-exam processes and determine student perceptions of current approaches and in-course remediation.

Methods: Successful completion of the five-semester Pharmacotherapeutics course series is required sequentially to progress in the curriculum. Post-exam processes and a metacognitive approach to in-course remediation were implemented five years ago. Students immediately review missed questions and rationale through the ExamSoft secure review and receive the Strengths and Opportunities report. If an exam score is less than 70%, the established in-course remediation process requires students to complete a post-exam reflection survey. Despite these processes, there is still a need for further remediation. Current first-, second-, and third-year pharmacy students in the campus-based and online pathway completed an anonymous Qualtrics survey. The survey questions consisted of multiple-choice, 5-point Likert scale, and open-ended to evaluate student perceptions of current post-exam processes and in-course remediation.

Results: The survey response rate was 97% (226/233) and included 202 campus-based and 23 online pathway students. Of the 226 respondents, 77% of students agreed or strongly agreed to preferring the immediate exam review over the Strengths and Opportunities report, while 48% preferred to utilize both. Out of 29% who completed a post-exam reflection, 65% agreed or strongly agreed that this was a valuable tool to review their learning strategies. For in-course remediation, 61% agreed or strongly agreed they would appreciate an in-course remediation process, and 74% are willing to put in additional effort. Student comments will be reviewed for overall themes.

Conclusions: Students value the immediate exam review and post-exam reflection survey and view in-course remediation as a positive tool for success. Next steps include refining processes and piloting a change to our in-course remediation approach.
