(175) Iterative Process of Curriculum Mapping for Commonly Used Drugs

Objective : To describe an iterative process of mapping commonly used drugs (CUDs) across the curriculum and the impact on continuous quality improvement initiatives

Methods: At the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Saint Joseph’s University, CUD information is taught and assessed longitudinally throughout the PharmD competency-driven curriculum, which was implemented in fall 2018. The initial CUD list had been developed and maintained by faculty coordinating the practice lab course in the sunsetting curriculum. This original list underwent a holistic review in 2022 followed by a subsequent mapping process. The list and map were again revised in fall of 2023. The entire faculty participated in the process during scheduled faculty development days.

Results: The initial CUD list had 178 medications. In 2022, faculty reviewed a list of 587 medications that were compiled from a NAPLEX preparation resource, drug sales data, and the original list. This resulted in a revised CUD list totaling 237 medications which were then mapped to courses. This process identified therapeutic topics related to eye disorders as a curricular gap (glaucoma/macular degeneration) resulting in action by the curriculum committee. In fall of 2023, the mapping revisions included: 34 additions, 17 removals, and 1 correction of a drug formulation. At that time, faculty also suggested revisions to 111 drugs in the student CUD study guides. Faculty have reported modifications of their teaching and assessments within individual courses to better align with the CUD list. While involving the entire faculty is time intensive, it promotes buy-in and supports a longitudinal approach to students learning CUD knowledge across the curriculum.

Conclusions: Implementing a holistic CUD mapping approach involving all faculty supports continuous quality improvement at both the course and curriculum level.
