(314) IPPE Readiness: An Rx for Success

Objective : To explore student Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) readiness using near-peer conveyed information from Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students. Researchers anticipated an impact on pre-IPPE student perceptions of and preparation for IPPE, key factors representing the novel concept, IPPE readiness.

Methods: Researchers collected data from first-year students at four institutions using an online survey measuring perceptions of IPPE importance and preparedness prior to IPPE (control group). One year later, first-year pre-IPPE students attended a required live panel at each institution where APPE students shared reflections and advice in response to semi-structured, standardized questions and then completed the same survey (intervention group). A mixed-methods approach was used to investigate the impact of the intervention in a robust manner. Survey data were quantitatively analyzed for comparisons. Following the completion of the IPPE, eight student focus groups were conducted to obtain insight from the intervention group. Focus group data were analyzed via thematic analysis utilizing inductive methods.

Results: Ninety-three control group students and 123 intervention group students completed the survey (25% and 36.7% response rates, respectively). Students in both cohorts indicated high positive responses, implying they felt similarly prepared to face the challenges and expectations of IPPE learning. Forty students participated in the post-IPPE focus groups. Several overarching themes emerged including management of student IPPE expectations, impact of APPE peer insight on pre-IPPE student mindset, and strategies for institutions to continue to optimize IPPE readiness.

Conclusions: This study introduces the novel concept of "IPPE readiness." The innovative and collaborative design resulted in data that informs pedagogical practices to further optimize student preparation for IPPE. Researchers intend to continue conversations and collaborations to address IPPE readiness across the Academy.
