(64) Faculty-Led Global Pharmacy Experiences to Increase Doctor of Pharmacy Student Engagement in International Education

Objective : This study's purpose was to describe the implementation of short-term faculty-led global pharmacy experiences (GPEs) for Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students at the USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We hypothesized that these experiences would lead to increased student engagement in international education, contributing to broader appreciation for global learning among PharmD students.

Methods: In 2022, USC Mann introduced faculty-led GPEs, providing short-term study abroad opportunities for PharmD students in their P1 or P2 years. This initiative allowed students to explore pharmacy practice in non-U.S. settings as part of the PharmD curriculum. Faculty-led programs were designed to guide students through Covid-19 related travel issues, aiming for a more structured learning experience. Unlike the previous independent GPE model, students traveled with peers and a faculty leader. Since 2022, faculty-led programs have been offered alongside independent GPEs, reinstated in 2023. An assessment of students’ motivation to participate, interest in other global experiences, and self-reported learning outcomes was conducted.

Results: In 2022 and 2023, 15 PharmD students participated in faculty-led GPEs, while 2 engaged in independent GPEs across 3 countries. Anticipated growth in 2024 includes up to 25 PharmD students in faculty-led GPEs and 8 in independent GPEs across 6 countries. Preliminary data show that GPE participation correlates with enrollment in international Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience, with 3 of 8 eligible GPE students enrolled for 2024-2025. Survey data from students participating in faculty-led GPEs underscore the value placed on the structured experience, with the “opportunity to travel with peers” as a significant motivating factor. Comprehensive data for the 2024 program will be presented.

Conclusions: The implementation of faculty-led GPEs has increased engagement from students in global learning opportunities.
