(32) Comparison of Pharmacy Student Knowledge/Confidence Pre- and Post-Neonatal Intensive Care Simulation: A Single Cohort Study

Objective : Evaluate third-year Doctor of Pharmacy students’ pre- and post-simulation test scores and perceptions on a neonatal intensive care (NICU) simulation.

Methods: A total of ten students in the Spring 2024 Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Elective participated in four NICU simulation stations including neonatal sepsis, total parenteral nutrition, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and medication safety. Students completed pre- and post-simulation questionnaires and 10-question multiple-choice assessments. Feedback was collected for quality improvement. The primary outcome was an analysis on student scores of the pre- and post-simulation written examinations utilizing descriptive statistics.

Results: Students (average age: 24.3 years, 80% female, 100% response rate) had an increase in written exam scores (pre: 54%, post: 61%). Previous student work experience included community pharmacy (60%) and hospital with no pediatric experience (30%). Perceptions of ability to provide pharmaceutical care and recommend correct dosage forms remained consistent. Confidence in dosing medications and determining appropriate volumes decreased. Students expressed enjoyment in learning in a simulated real-world environment but indicated a need for more exposure and learning.

Conclusions: NICU simulation did not significantly improve knowledge or confidence in NICU pharmacotherapy. Additional simulation practice is recommended for enhanced preparedness in this specialized patient care setting.
