Objective : To evaluate the perception and attitudes of pharmacy career readiness.
Methods: A survey-based study assessed pharmacy student perceptions and attitudes regarding career readiness. A survey of 20 questions consisted of statements where students provided their interpretation as a myth or truth related to pharmacy career readiness. These statements were aligned and mapped according to the pillars of modern career planning (e.g., goals, skills, and advisors).
Results: 73% (152/208) responded to the survey, and 59% (123/208) consented to participate. 39% (48/123) were first-generation college students, and 11% (13/123) were second-career students. There were eight truths where students’ perceptions were correct, ranging from 50% to 97%. The remaining were twelve myths where students’ perceptions were aligned, ranging from 6% to 72%. A total of six statements were aligned and mapped with skill development, and the myths and truths were correctly perceived, ranging from 18% to 97%. Two statements were mapped for building a relationship with advisors, and the attitude correctly ranged from 6% to 58%.
Conclusions: Students were more likely to identify the truths related to career readiness. Responses showed they understand fundamental career management principles. Skills development and building relationships with advisors are the two pillars of modern career planning that students need support with.
