Pharmacogenomics SIG Programming: Innovative Pharmacogenomic Teaching Practices in the Laboratory, Didactic, and Virtual Classrooms

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe how students gain proficiency in interpreting PGx test results and communicating PGx-based therapy recommendations effectively to providers and patients through simulating pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing in the laboratory
  • Explain how interdisciplinary vertical and horizontal integration of various techniques may promote pharmacogenomics didactic learning.
  • Recognize various steps to designing, facilitating, and evaluating a virtual interprofessional pharmacogenomics activity that effectively promotes collaboration and pharmacogenomics knowledge sharing among healthcare professionals.
In this session, the 2022-2023 Pharmacogenomics SIG Innovation in Pharmacogenomics Teaching Award winners highlight teaching methods used to engage pharmacy students across the curriculum in different learning environments using a variety of delivery methods. Specifically, these novel approaches include simulating pharmacogenomic testing implementation in a community pharmacy laboratory setting, integrating pharmacogenomics into didactic courses vertically and horizontally through cross-disciplinary collaboration and engaging with Doctor of Osteopathy students in interprofessional virtual team-based activities centered around pharmacogenomics.
