A Not-So Trivial Pursuit: Using Implementation Science to Develop a Competency-Driven Curriculum

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Explore implementation science (IS) concepts and the National Implementation Research Network’s Heptagon Tool.
  • Using a practical example as a guide, discuss the use of the IS Heptagon Tool to determine the need, evidence, fit, usability, capacity, and supports for determining the feasibility of practice and education transformation.
Implementation science is the “methods or techniques used to enhance the adoption, implementation and sustainability” of an intervention and was recently endorsed as an important means for guiding practice and education transformation efforts by the Academy. The National Implementation Research Network’s Heptagon Tool helps evaluate the fit and feasibility of implementing programs or initiatives. This interactive session describes the utilization of this tool during curriculum transformation to a competency-driven model.
