First-generation College Students: Who Are They and How Can We Support Them?

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe FGCS demographics in pharmacy programs and compare and contrast these parameters across disciplines in higher education
  • Identify the challenges FGCS face in the admissions process and in pharmacy programs.
  • Develop strategies to support FGCS through the admissions process and ongoing student success.
First-generation college students (FGCS) have unique backgrounds and challenges navigating professional education. Presenters will share new data on FGCS demographics extracted from PharmCAS and FGCS panelists will stimulate discussion by adding further context and examples of challenges and needs, framed using the Two-Truths-and-a-Lie game. A workshop will provide pharmacy educators a platform to identify and discuss action items to support students starting from admissions and continuing with student success initiatives through graduation.
