(310) Identifying Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Student Confidence In NAPLEX Topics And Study Plans

Objective : To determine advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) student confidence regarding NAPLEX topics and study plans.

Methods: APPE students completed a mini-practice NAPLEX of 75 questions over 2 hours which was developed by the school of pharmacy. APPE students then completed a reflection identifying the content they knew well, the content they need to study, and their exam preparation plans and resources. Counts of content topics, study plans, and resources were determined from reflection text to better understand student NAPLEX preparation needs.

Results: Of the 95 students in the 2024 graduating class, 94 (98.9%) completed the reflection. Content that APPE students felt most prepared for included cardiology (41.5%), calculations (35.1%), diabetes (24.4%), determining treatment plans (21.3%), infectious disease (10.6%), and brand/generic names (10.6%). Content APPE students felt least prepared for included calculations (56.4%), infectious disease (44.7%), brand/generic names (37.2%), oncology (32.9%), compounding (17%), and “everything” (10.6%). The most common study plans included obtaining a NAPLEX study book (92.6%), study groups (36.2%), practice questions/exams (29.8%), prioritizing topics (22.3%), and online tools/apps (19.1%).

Conclusions: A mini-practice NAPLEX can be used to facilitate APPE student reflection on NAPLEX preparation plans. These reflections can be used by pharmacy programs to create or curate NAPLEX review resources for students. Pharmacy programs can also consider facilitating student study groups promoting exam preparation.
