Collaborative Growth: Cultivating Interprofessional Excellence in Pharmacy Education

Objective: To review how Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) College of Pharmacy (COP) created faculty development opportunities related to interprofessional education (IPE).

Methods: In 2021, the NEOMED COP dedicated 0.2 full-time equivalent (FTE) to a new Director of Professional Development (DPD) and 0.2 FTE to a new Director of IPE. These faculty created an IPE professional development workshop for NEOMED COP faculty and staff with partner health profession institutions. Additionally, the DPD collaborated with the university and College of Medicine faculty development directors to convert the semi-annual Celebration of Medical Education workshop into an interprofessional event promoted as the Celebration of Health Professions Education. In 2022, a new DPD for the College of Graduate Studies was added.

Results: Since 2022, IPE professional development workshops have occurred annually and exposed COP faculty to the college’s IPE activities with their partner institutions. Topics have included interdisciplinary team building, interpersonal effectiveness, and development and assessment of IPE activities. The university team has successfully hosted six joint events covering topics that included creating effective learning objectives, mapping assessments to lecture and course learning objectives, and implementing effective curriculum design. These workshops have also highlighted faculty contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Conclusion: The efforts of this group have increased the dissemination of faculty innovations and encouraged future collaborations. Creation of a faculty DPD has improved the COP’s professional development for faculty and staff. In addition to the interprofessional workshops, the DPD has created other professional development opportunities in a variety of forms.
