Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Compare and contrast traditional and alternative grading systems.
  • Develop a plan to integrate one or more alternative grading strategies in an elective or required PharmD or graduate course.
  • Identify approaches to navigate potential challenges when implementing alternative grading strategies in elective and required PharmD or graduate courses.
Traditional grading systems inaccurately measure learning, compromise motivation, contribute to educational inequities and negatively impact mental health. Alternative grading strategies such as specifications grading, contract grading and ungrading are potentially more effective practices to foster learning. But where can pharmacy educators even begin? In this workshop, participants can learn from alternative grading experiences of faculty at 4 different Pharm.D. programs and develop their own stepwise approach to implement alternative grading in required or elective courses.
