Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the role of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism (DEIA) work in pharmacy education to advance health equity.
  • Identify resistance to DEIA through the framework of denial, disengagement, derailment.
  • Formulate strategies that can be used to mitigate DEIA resistance at an interpersonal, organizational, and state policy level using case studies.
Resistance to diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism (DEIA) initiatives is not a new challenge. However, recent sociopolitical trends have intensified opposition in higher education. This session will provide insights into interpersonal, institutional and national forces that threaten progress of DEIA efforts. Participants will be equipped with strategies and responses to patterns of resistance through the context of denial, disengagement and derailment. The target audience is all educators and administrators committed to promoting DEIA and well-being.
