Dr. Justin Gatwood is a health services researcher who is currently an Associate Professor of Health Outcomes and Policy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy. His research program focuses on improving medication adherence and immunizations with a special emphasis on optimizing pharmacist involvement in patient care. While at UTHSC, this has included analyzing veterans’ antidiabetic medication use for racial and regional variation in adherence and outcomes, testing tailored text messages to improve diabetes self-care activities among underserved African American adults with diabetes, and examining oral anticancer medication adherence and its initiation on chronic disease medication use. Most recently, Dr. Gatwood's work focused on improving herpes zoster and pneumococcal vaccination rates in community pharmacies by testing technology-assisted and communication-focused mechanisms among pharmacists. His team is also focused on better understanding adult vaccination and the social determinants that may influence this behavior and is currently leading efforts to equip community pharmacists across Tennessee to combat COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. His research has been funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the State of Tennessee, the Community Pharmacy Foundation, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), Merck, AstraZeneca, and GlaxoSmithKline. Dr. Gatwood has a BA in Economics from Cornell University, an MPH from The Ohio State University, and a PhD in Social and Administrative Pharmacy from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining the UTHSC faculty, he worked in sales and marketing for sanofi-aventis US Pharma and analytical consulting for Truven Health Analytics.
