One Size Does Not Fit All! Strategies to Evaluate Scholarship Across Pharmacy Schools

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the concept of scholarly activity in light of Boyer’s and Glassick’s theories
  • Identify the gaps in current assessment strategies used to evaluate faculty scholarly work
  • Develop effective approaches to determine and measuring faculty scholarly activities
Pharmacy faculty are required to engage in scholarly activities for retention, promotion and tenure. However, consensus regarding what constitutes scholarship, and a holistic evaluation of its “quality,” remains problematic. We will identify challenges with standardizing scholarship quality metrics across the diverse national spectrum of pharmacy schools. This session will examine assessment strategies based on Boyer’s and Glassick’s scholarship frameworks. Different models of scholarly assessment and best practices will be discussed through team-based audience participation.
